Championship run

WESTFIELD – The Northampton and Amherst girls’ cross country teams gave fans a run for their money this past weekend at Stanley Park.

Amherst’s Sophia Jacobs-Towns won the Western Massachusetts Division 1 championship 5K race Sunday, winning the individual title in 19 minutes flat. Four Northampton runners finished in the top seven to lead the Blue Devils to the team title with a combined score of 31.
Amherst (55), Wahconah (112), South Hadley (122), Longmeadow (160), Minnechaug (197), and Westfield (212) rounded out the top seven.
Westfield’s Sophie Gronbeck placed 11th overall in 20:46. Mia McDonald cracked the top 30, finishing 29th in 21:52.

DIVISION 2: Rebecca Drohen led Southwick with a 23rd place finish (20:56). The Rams were eighth overall (205) … Autumn Marchetto was the first Gateway female student-athlete to cross the finish line. Marchetto came in 77th (24:26).

BOYS’ RESULTS:
Westfield’s Gabriel Piepergerde claimed 10th place finish in the Division 1 race with a time of 16:57. Chris Daley and Isak Lund finished in 34th (17:54) and 39th (18:05), respectively, for the Bombers, an eighth place overall team finisher … Southwick’s William Carroll was 14th (17:43) in D2. The Rams were ninth overall. Gateway’s Brandon Daniels was 23rd (18:17).
