Soaring to the top

EAST LONGMEADOW – There’s nobody better.
For at least the next two days, the Westfield High School girls’ lacrosse team is seated safely atop the Valley League. The Bombers won a back-and-forth, 11-10 thriller on the road at East Longmeadow Tuesday.
East Longmeadow (7-3 overall, 4-1 Valley) scored a game-tying with about five minutes remaining in regulation. Two minutes later, Westfield (6-2 overall, 4-0 Valley) notched the game-winning goal.
Westfield led 6-5 at the half.

Olivia Chaoush led Westfield on the offensive front with five goals. Bombers’ Hannah Jarvis had three goals and one assist.
Westfield goalie Yvonne Headley and Liz Clark finished with four saves apiece.
“It was a very hard-fought win,” Westfield coach Paul Fenwick said. “We need to reload, and we are due to play them again this Friday.”
A rematch between the two teams will take place in the Whip City Friday at 4 p.m.

Bombers shut out Colts
Westfield 5, Chicopee Comp 0
Tristan Viale (6-0, 6-1), Lyle Libanan (6-0, 6-3), Shane Holloway (6-2, 6-0) won at Nos. 1, 2, and 3 singles, respectively for Westfield. Bombers’ pairs, Matt Roberts and Jimmy Knapik won at first singles 6-2, 6-4, and, Jalen Bodendorf and Joey Burzynski won at second singles, 6-1, 6-1.

Doyle tough in defeat
Greenfield 5, St. Mary 0
Patrick Doyle lost a hard-fought first set before falling 7-6, 6-1 to Greenfield’s Fahrah Day at first singles.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Bombers sweep Brownies
Westfield def. Agawam 25-13, 25-18, 25-20
Westfield improved to 10-0 overall, 6-0 North Division with a sweeping victory on the road.
Scott Walsh (25 assists, 9 digs), Tyler Stanton (18 digs, 2 aces), Ryan Murray (9 kills), Noah Kappel (9 kills), and Eddie Loboda (7 kills, 10 digs) contributed for the Bombers.

BASEBALL
Bombers bounce back
Westfield 5, Chicopee Comp 3

Westfield pitcher Ari Schwartz (6 inn., 5 Ks, 5 walks) tossed a one-hitter, lead-off batter Austin St. Pierre (run, 2 RBIs) homered, and Anthony Clark went 2-for-2 with a double, run, and RBI. Mitchell Longley (hit) drove in two RBIs for the Bombers.

Ware 14, Gateway 2 (5 inn.)
Erica Wolfe, Alison Manos, Dana Brittland, and Taryn Kubik each collected hits for Gateway.

BOYS’ LACROSSE
Bombers nipped
Algonquin 9, Westfield 8
Westfield’s Landon Reyes netted a hat trick, Max Maggipinto had two goals and one assist, Matt Bonsall finished with two goals and one assist, Chris Ward collected one goal, and three players – Lunardini, Webster, and Cree – had one assist apiece.
Westfield goalie Alex Beauchemin made 14 saves in net. Mitch Weiss delivered outstanding defense and clears for the Bombers.
