Westfield State athletics director Richard Lenfest welcomed a list of honored guests which included; President Dr. Ramon S. Torrecilha, Vice President for Student Affairs; Dr. Carlton Pickron, Vice-President for Student Affairs, Dan Forster, Vice-President for Enrollment Management, Dr. Erica Broman, Vice-President for Enrollment Management; , Dr. Jennifer Hanselman, the Owls Faculty Athletic Representative, Dr. Shelly Tinkham, Dean of the College of Graduate and Continuing Education and Trustee Kevin Queenin ’70 and alumnus and benefactor Jim Parker to center court, as the student athletes who had received a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better ringed the court to be recognized as their names scrolled on the large Galaxy board display at the Woodward Center.
It is notable that 60 percent of the varsity student-athletes at Westfield State have 3.0 or higher cumulative grade-point average.
Dr. Torrecilha made some brief remarks addressing the student athletes in celebration of their accomplishments.
“I commend the Department of Athletics, its staff, and coaches for creating an environment conducive to success on and off the playing field.” said Dr. Torrecilha, “Thank you to our professors who work around the schedules of our student-athletes and partner in their academic success. I also appreciate the parents, family members, friends and neighbors who support our students in their participation in and commitment to athletics. And finally, thank you to our student-athletes for prioritizing their academics and putting forth your best effort, both on and off the field of play. Tonight, we salute you.”
“As athletics director, this is one of the proudest days we have in our department,” said Lenfest. “In order to be a good team member and to achieve on the field, on the ice, on the court or in the pool, you have to be a good student, and I’m so proud to have these folks as members of the Westfield State Owls athletic family.”
After the ceremony, a reception was held in the field house with pizza and drinks for all of the athletes who were recognized, along with faculty and administrators in attendance. Each member of the 3.0 club received a commemorative Dri-Fit t-shirt as well. – Courtesy of Westfield State University Sports
