Annual art show this week

SOUTHWICK – The Southwick Cultural Council is set to host the 18th Annual Fine Arts Exhibition and Sale on April 29 and April 30. The event is free for admission and open to the public on both days from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Southwick Town Hall.

There are over 40 artists from Western Massachusetts and Northern Connecticut that were selected to put their art on display. The types of art include oil, acrylic, woodcarving, sculpture, photography, fabric art, stained glass, scratchboard, and many more.

“It’s a good show, it’s a lot of fun,” said Pat McMahon, who is the Chairman of the Southwick Cultural Council. “It’s a benefit to the town and a benefit to the artists.”

On Thursday and Friday, all artists participating in the show will hang their art on a four by six foot panel for the judges and the public to see on Saturday and Sunday. This also allows the artists to have the option of attending the exhibition or not attending; either way their art still has a chance to win.

“For the artists, it’s a very nice opportunity to participate in a show without having to physically be there,” said McMahon. “It’s a little different than a lot of art shows.”

The poster art for the show is called “Hummingbird,” which was created by Joan Barnard-Nelson. The Southwick Historical Society will also have “Catching a Ride on the Farmington Canal” on display which will feature illustrations from Robert Madison’s new book, who is a local author. Madison’s book is titled “New Haven and Northampton Canal Greenway” Both books will be for sale and all the proceeds will go towards the purchase of signs highlighting the locations of the past canals in each of the towns.

According to McMahon, the Southwick Regional High School band and chorus will be performing at the art show alongside Director Richard Quinn from 10 a.m. to Noon on Saturday.

“It’s a neat partnership with the schools so were really happy that their participating,” said McMahon.
