BMX racing for a good cause

It is a race against time, but it is well worth it.

On Saturday, riders of all ages are invited to participate in the “Race for Life,” a charity event designed to raise money for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Registration will take place at Whip City BMX, located at the Westfield Fair Grounds on Russellville Road from 9-11 a.m. The race is scheduled to begin at noon. There is a participation fee of $20. Membership is not required.

“It’s a good way to give back,” said track director Al Pighetti. “I always tell the kids that there are less fortunate kids out there. This is a chance to help them out.”

All of the proceeds will be donated to the Leukemia Foundation, Pighetti said.

“It’s a little introduction to BMX (riding) too,” he added.

While the race will ultimately go a long way in helping people affected by blood-related cancers, it will offer families a “free” night out and a chance to see what the sport offers.

The annual event raises close to $7,000. It began nearly a decade ago when a rider contracted leukemia. People within the sport organized the event to help out the individual, and it has been run every year since.

There will also be a raffle for a BMX bike.
