Bombers slam into road block

WILBRAHAM – The Westfield High School boys’ soccer team ran into a roadblock Monday.
Senior sensation Mike Rita scored one goal and assisted on another, and arguably the best team in Western Massachusetts, the Minnechaug Falcons, swooped past the Westfield Bombers 3-0 with a strong second half surge.
Rita netted a goal in the 45th minute, his 17th of the season. He also assisted on another as Minnechaug went on to score twice more to seal the victory.
“We looked good in the first half,” Westfield coach Andrew Joseph said. “We made three mistakes (in the second half), and they scored on three mistakes.”
Ian Saltmarsh made five saves for Westfield, which fell to 7-4-4.

St. Mary 9, Hampden Charter School of Science 0

Aaron Blanchard (4 goals, 1 assist), Jack Lamirande (2 goals, 1 assist), Matt Masciadrelli (1 goal, 2 assists), Padraig Smith (1 goal), Jacob Butler (1 goal), Kevin Rockwal (1 assist), Gio Depergola (1 assist), and Drew Collins (1 assist) all got in the scoring act for St. Mary.
Butler made 15 saves in a shutout. Freshman Dominic Nomakeo also had 10 saves.
“All-around good game,” said St. Mary coach Bill Lamirande, whose team netted its fifth victory of the season.

Saints, Tigers tied
St. Mary 2, Westfield Technical Academy 2

Allie Goodreau scored two goals – Sam Manchino assisted on one score, Jenna Turinni on the other – and St. Mary battled to a tie of Westfield Tech.
Aisling Butler finished with 12 saves.
“This is two games in a row where our Lady Saints really came together with all elements of our play,” St. Mary coach Andy Lussier said. “I’m really proud of how things have come together in the last two weeks. It’s just unfortunate that we only have a handful of games left.”

Westfield scored two goals – one in each half – and staved off Holyoke. Miranda Boudreau and Hannah Jarvis tallied the scores. Marissa Otero had one assist.
Westfield goalie Gwen Smith made four saves. The Bombers improved to 5-6-2.

Rachel LeBarron scored two goals, and Jessica Van Heynigen tallied one in Gateway’s shutout victory. Samantha Belardo earned an assist.
Gateway goalie Becca Herman made eight saves to pitch a shutout in net. The Gators improved to 9-2-3.

Southwick 3, Hoosac Valley 2
Lydia Kinsman had a hand in all three scores for Southwick, scoring two goals and assisting on another. Emily Giancola scored one goal. Sam Peruse had an assist.

JV BOYS’ SOCCER

Evan Clarke (unassisted) and Eric Haynes (assisted by Vincent Diaz) scored for Southwick. The Rams improved to 7-2-3.
