Bombers take flight

WESTFIELD – Although Minnechaug swept Westfield in a high school girls’ tennis match Wednesday 5-0, the Bombers did not go down without a fight in their regular season finale.
Westfield seniors Camille McKenzie and Emma Macleod battled Minnechaug’s Alexis Knight and Anita Kriz at first doubles before falling 6-1, 6-3. The Bombers’ second doubles pair, senior Elizabeth Poteat and MacKenzie Mculver lost a hard-fought match to Ali Boudreau and Kate Sierno, 6-3, 6-4.

Westfield senior Anushka Sharma mustered a point in each set of a two-set match before falling to Minnechaug’s Ester Kriz, 6-1, 6-1.

BASEBALL
Daley dices up Pioneers
St. Mary 8, Pathfinder 0

St. Mary pitcher John Daley tossed a one-hit shutout, striking out 10 batters and walking one at Westfield Middle School North. Daley helped himself out at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs, and an RBI.
Matt Masciadrelli (2 walks, run), Jake Butler (2 runs, RBI), Hunter Authier (2 RBIs), Quinn Powers (RBI), and Drew Collins (walk) each had a hit for St. Mary. Saints’ Shaun Gezotis walked three times and scored two runs, and Kevin Rockwal scored a run.

Bombers chase Terriers
Westfield 9, West Springfield 1

Westfield raced out to a 5-0 lead and leaned on the arm of pitcher Ryan Towle (4 Ks), who scattered five hits over seven complete innings at Bullens Field.
J.D. Huntley went 4-for-4 with a double, two runs, and an RBI to lead Westfield at the plate. Bombers’ Sean Moorhouse (2-for-4, 2 runs, RBI) and Stefan Krol (2-for-3, double, run, RBI), and Jacob Colapietro (2-for-2, RBI) collected two hits apiece.

Pittsfield turns back Southwick
Pittsfield 8, Southwick-Tolland 5

Southwick’s Dan Burnett went 3-for-4 with two runs; Nick Kavrakis went 2-for-3 with a double, run scored, and RBI; Bart Shea went 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBIs; Eddie Martinez had a hit, RBI, and run scored; and Miguel Gonzalez had a hit.

SOFTBALL
Clemente, Bombers prevail
Westfield 18, Belchertown 8

Westfield’s Nicole Clemente tossed a complete game, recording five strikeouts in the process. Clemente also helped herself out at the plate with four hits.
Morgan Zabielski had three hits for Westfield. Bombers’ Cam Leonard and Matt Robitaille each had a hit and were solid defensively.

Sabis 14, Gateway 0

Erika Wolfe picked up her 25th hit of the season against Sabis.

BOYS’ TENNIS
Bombers top Saints
Westfield 5, St. Mary 0

Jalen Bodendorf (6-1, 6-2), Jimmy Knapik (6-0, 6-1), and Joey Burzynski (6-4, 3-6, 7-6, (15-13)) swept singles play for Westfield.
Burzynski and St. Mary’s Dom Nomakeo played a thriller with Burzynski taking the first set by two, and Nomakeo tying it one-all. Burzynski won a marathon third-set tiebreak, 15-13.
Westfield’s Erik Unger and Sean Mitchell, and, Matt Kiefer and Donald Chang won at first and second doubles, respectively, by the exact same score of 6-0, 6-1.
“It was another demonstration of all-around good sportsmanship by both teams,” St. Mary coach George Hart said. “The Saints continue to show excellent efforts and improvements.”
St. Mary wraps up its regular season against Pioneer Valley Christian Academy at Municipal Tennis Courts at 5 p.m. The Saints’ girls’ final match (also against PVCA) precedes it at 3:30.
Next up for Westfield: the Western Massachusetts team tournament.

Pittsfield 8, Southwick-Tolland 3

Nick Brandoli, Josh Harriman, and Dominic Vercellone each had two hits for Southwick.

Hannah Jarvis and Olivia Chaoush each scored five goals to lead Westfield on offense. Bombers’ goalie Yvonne Headley made five saves.
