Brown saves Saints

WEST SPRINGFIELD – Students may have been on holiday break for the past couple weeks, but one local high school upperclassman has been putting in hours earning extra credit.
St. Mary senior Zach Brown collected 72 saves over his last two games – a 2-1 loss to West Springfield (Dec. 29) at the Olympia and a 4-4 tie against Chicopee Comprehensive (Dec. 30) at Amelia Park Ice Arena.
Brown made 48 saves against West Side, allowing just a first- and third-period goal. In that game, sophomore forward Andrew Booth scored the lone goal for St. Mary (1-3-2).
Against Chicopee Comp, Brown allowed a pair of second- and third-period goals; ditto for the opposing goalie. Senior forward Jeff Hockenberry scored a hat trick, and Ashton Bourbonnais netted a goal for the Saints. Colts’ Travis Seymour also tallied a hat trick, scoring three goals.
St. Mary will return to school and return to action on the ice Wed., Jan. 2 at St. Joe’s. The game will be played at Pittsfield Ice Arena at 6 p.m.
In Wednesday’s other area sporting events, Westfield hosts Agawam in wrestling at 7 p.m.
St. Mary hockey will receive little rest as the Saints travel to Fitzpatrick Arena to take on the Chicopee Pacers. Elsewhere, St. Mary and Westfield Voc-Tech collide in a boys’ basketball tilt at WVTHS, Gateway plays at Holyoke Catholic (Chicopee Academy), and the Gators’ wrestling team hosts Granby.
