SOUTHWICK – Columbia Gas recently presented their “Firefighter Safety” program at the Southwick Fire Department. Columbia Gas created the program to give firefighters a better understanding of how natural gas is delivered, responding to gas incidents, and the best ways for emergency responders to practice gas related events.

Eric Madison, a retired Chief for the Longmeadow Fire Department and now the Public Safety Trainer for Columbia Gas, was the instructor for the program. According to the press release sent out by the Southwick Fire Department, Madison went over gas properties, system design, and any hazards that firefighters may face.

The real-life demonstrations were an integral part of the program that allowed the firefighters to get a better sense of what they could encounter in the situations that Madison discussed.

Madison clearly felt that the program is a tremendous benefit for both Columbia Gas and local fire departments.

“This training enhances the relationship between Columbia Gas of Massachusetts and our first responders,” said Madison. “It demonstrates the commitment that both the Southwick Fire Department and Columbia Gas have toward keeping our communities safe.”
