SOUTHWICK – Cancer is certainly serious business, but for survivor Patricia Phillips of Southwick, it’s all about the attitude.
While undergoing treatment for a second cancer scare a few years ago, friends commented on Phillips’ happy disposition, despite her medical ordeal.
Her response was that she had an “attitude of gratitude” and thus, her Relay For Life team name was born.
Phillips and Team Attitude of Gratitude co-captain Kerri Tichy , also of Southwick, have been spreading Phillips’ message for the past three years. Along they way, they have raised funds and awareness.
“One in three Americans has been touched by cancer or knows someone who has,” said Tichy. “So many people in my family have had it that I know I will get it, and I’m raising funds in the hope that maybe by the time I have it, it won’t be so bad.”
To help team Attitude of Gratitude, the Daily Grind is hosting a team fundraiser with its sixth annual Craft and Artisan Fair Sunday, May 4 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
The event is geared toward families and will include an Arcade On Wheels from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
“They charge a $5 admission and they’re giving 20-percent of the profits back to the charity,” said Tichy.
A magician, DJ, sand art and tie dye area round out the entertainment. There will also be 80 crafters, vendors and direct sellers.
Tichy said the offerings include a wide variety of items from hand-sewn pillows, natural make-up products, quilts, wood carvings, wine glasses, photography and more.
“There’s an eclectic mix,” Tichy said.
The fair was originally billed as a spa day geared toward women. Over the years, it evolved into a family day. Tichy said it has always benefitted a charity.
“Each vendor is donating an item for raffles, which will take place throughout the day,” said Tichy.
The event takes place at The Daily Grind, 568 College Highway. Team Attitude of Gratitude is participating in the Agawam Relay For Life Friday, May 16 and Saturday, May 17 at the Agawam High School track and sports field.
