HUNTINGTON – The Gateway high school bands and choral groups traveled to New Jersey and New York City on May 3rd to perform in competition. Students competed in the “Music in the Parks” program, held at Six Flags Great Adventure, in New Jersey.
“The Chorus, Show Choir, Jazz Band and Concert Band all performed and were judged,” announced instrumental music director, Beth Guertin.
The Chorus, Jazz Band and Concert Band all received a rating of “Excellent”; the Show Choir received a rating of “Good”.
Sophomore guitarist John Armitage was one of three students throughout the day’s competition who received an overall individual award for Oustanding Soloist.
After competing, the students had a chance to enjoy some time at the amusement park. On Saturday, they traveled to New York City and took a ferry to see and learn about the Statue of Liberty. Later that day, they visited the World Trade Center Memorial and went to the top of the Empire State Building in the evening.

On Sunday, the group took a bus tour of Manhatten, had some free time in Times Square and then went to the Broadway to see “Matilda”. “The show inspired many of our students, who saw some wonderful kids performing on stage,” Guertin said.
“Overall, it was a great trip,” said Guertin. “The students were great, they all carried themselves well, and were inspired by the surroundings of New York City!”
