Hamel, Bombers excel

WESTFIELD – The Westfield High School gymnastics team is showing no signs of slowing down.
Westfield gymnast Taryn Hamel won her fourth straight All-Around competition to begin the 2013 season, and the Bombers finished first again to improve to 6-0 through four meets and 84-0 over the last several years.
“It was a big night for her,” Westfield coach Joanne Hewins said of the Bombers’ gymnast.
Westfield placed first overall in 136.275, followed by Chicopee Comp (135.35) and Hampshire (122.375). The Bombers swept the top three spots in the All-Around. Hamel scored a 34.725. Kendall Neidig (32.925) and Angela Bonavita (32.8) placed second and third, respectively.
Hamel medaled on the balance beam (8.8), and tied Neidig on the uneven bars (8.45). Brendan Whitman captured gold on the floor exercise with a 9.325.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Sabis 1, Gateway 0
Sabis scored in the 79th minute to escape with the last-minute victory. Gateway goalies Mike Arel (4 saves) and Spencer Wroth (3 saves) split time in net.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
McCann Tech 3, Westfield Voc-Tech 0
Westfield Voc-Tech yielded to unbeaten McCann Tech, but delivered a strong outing. Megan Illnicky had 14 saves, including three sensational stops. Julia Levkha continued to play strong defense, and Aedan Orr played well.
JV RESULTS
Southwick-Tolland 4, Central 0
Samantha Perusse scored two goals, and McKenzie Frey and Rachael Healey had one apiece to lead Southwick. It was Healey’s first high school goal.
Courtney Wheeler, Alyssa Cournoyer, and Frey each earned an assist for the Rams.
Southwick goalie Kayla Bergendale (3 saves) earned a shutout.
