HS WRAP-UP: Cards deal WHS loss

SPRINGFIELD – The Westfield and Pope Francis high school baseball teams exchange blows in a tightly-contested game Thursday at Forest Park Field.
The Cardinals prevailed with a ninth-inning knockout, 6-5.
Austin St. Pierre (RBI), Sean Murphy (RBI), Sean Moorhouse (RBI, run), and J.D. Huntley (run, RBI) collected two hits apiece.
Westfield will get a chance to bounce back Friday against Amherst at Bullens Field at 4:30 p.m.

Tigers scratch out victory
Westfield Technical Academy 4, McCann Tech 3

Cody Garwacki picked up the win on the mound for Westfield Tech, and Nick Clegg came in to earn a save as the Tigers nipped McCann Tech.
McCann picked up two runs in the first inning before Garwacki settled down. The Westfield Tech pitcher settled down, having 1-2-3 innings in the third and fourth innings.

In the seventh, Clegg struck out a batter, forced a ground out, and made a stellar play running to the third base line to pick up a slow roller to fire back to first base for the final out.
Westfield Tech’s Andrew Daniels went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs, while Cade Bradley went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The Tigers wrap up a four-game week against Sci-Tech at Forest Park in Springfield Friday.
“Players are showing a lot of spirit and pride and seem to be really enjoying the game and playing it the way it should be played,” said Westfield Tech coach Kyle Dulude.

Daley Ks 9 in Saints’ victory
St. Mary 4, Pathfinder 3

St. Mary pitcher John Daley struck out nine batters in a complete game victory on the mound.
Offensively for St. Mary, Jake Masciadrelli delivered two hits and an RBI, and Drew Collins drove in a run, and scored another. Daley went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Nate Bonini also scored a run for the Saints.

Rams chase ‘Cats
Southwick 19, Sci-Tech 4

Southwick’s Eddie Martinez (2-for-4, 3 runs scored), Dan McCllellan (4-for-4, 4 runs, 2 RBIs), Jake Goodreau (3-for-3, 4 RBIs), and Tyler Orban (2-for-2, run, 2 RBIs) led the offensive assault.
Sam Parker (4 inn.) picked up the victory on the mound for Southwick. Rams’ Travis Pirrello tossed a scoreless inning of relief.

SOFTBALL
Lachtara, Rams deal Cards shutout
Southwick 7, Pope Francis 0

Sydney Rogers went 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs, and an RBI; Steph Devine finished 2-for-3 with a double, run, and two RBIs; and, Nikki Willey batted 2-for-2 with a run and RBI for Southwick.
Rams’ ace Emily Lachtara struck out 14 batters.

Gamble goes down fighting
Easthampton 17, Gateway 3

Gateway pitcher Audrey Gamble struck out the side in the second inning, and went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored. Easthampton scored six runs in the third inning and five in the fourth to pull away.
Gamble also reached base on an error on hard hit ball to the left fielder.
Gateway’s Erica Wolfe walked, and had a pair of RBI ground outs.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Bombers rally past O’s
Westfield def. Belchertown, 22-25, 25-13, 25-19, 25-6

Westfield shook off an opening game loss to reel off three unanswered wins for a 3-1 victory.
Igor Belokopytov (11 kills, 5 aces), Shane Kiendzior (9 kills), Ryan Murray (7 kills, 2 blocks), Noah Kappel (10 kills), Scott Walsh (40 assists, 2 aces), Tyler Stanton (17 digs, 2 aces), Andrew Burrage (5 aces, 7 digs) and Eddie Loboda (8 kills, 3 aces, 8 digs) teamed up for Westfield.

Westfield 19, Agawam 6

Westfield built a 6-0 lead through the first quarter, and cruised from there.
Matt Chlastawa (2 goals, 6 assists), Mason Balch (3 goals, 2 assists), Zach Gentle (6 goals, 2 assists), Anthony Sullivan (3 goals, 3 assists), Max Maggipinto (2 goals), Reyes (1 assist), Matt Bonsall (1 goal), Dan Gosselin (1 goal), Kohl Lunardini (1 goal, 1 assist), Landon Reyes (1 assist), Bonsall (1 goal), Dan Gosselin (1 goal), and Kohl Lunardini (1 goal, 1 assist) contributed offensively for Westfield.
Mitch Weiss, Mario Metallo, and Neil Sheehan delivered strong defensive efforts for Westfield. Bombers’ goalies Matt Reynolds (13 saves) and Beauchemin (2) made several key stops.

GIRLS’ TENNIS
Panthers shut out Saints
Palmer 5, St. Mary 0

The Saint Mary’s Saints had a tough day of tennis against the Palmer Panthers.
Saint Mary’s Jessica Crosby played in the top singles spot against Palmer’s Amanda Costa. Crosby held a commanding lead for much of the first set, leading by as much as 4-1 before Costa began a comeback. Crosby eventually had to forfeit deep into the first set, due to illness. She withdrew from the match, down to Amanda 6-5.
Fiona Chen of Saint Mary’s played her first singles match of the season in the second position against Kimberly Huynh. Huynh won both sets 6-0, 6-0.
Saint Mary’s Brianna Rivera and Alexis Shedd played Palmer’s Alexa Bigda and Samantha Herring in first doubles. The Panthers won the first set 6-2 and took the second and deciding set, 6-3.
Saint Mary’s Zhenia Chang and Natasha Roberge faced Palmer’s second doubles’ mates, Aubrey De Caro and Hannah Begley. The Panthers were victorious, 6-0, 6-0.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE
Terriers edge Bombers
West Springfield 17, Westfield 16

Erin Gladu (4 goals, 4 assists) and Rudi Spano (5 goals, 1 assist) combined for 14 points as West Springfield clipped Westfield.
Rachel Gelina (6 goals, 3 assists) and Hannah Jarvis (2 goals, 3 assists) led Westfield. Bombers’ Olivia Chaoush and Samantha Kane recorded hat tricks.

JUNIOR VARSITY BASEBALL
JV Rams blank Cybercats for 5th straight ‘W’
Southwick 7, Sci-Tech 0

Josh Sylvia pitched a one-hit shutout through 6 innings, striking out 13 batters, and walking only two.
Sam Mizanglou, Josh Sylvia, Tyler Keeney, and Josh Lis each had extra base hits and one RBI apiece.
Johnny Cesan closed out the game on the mound with 3 strikeouts. Cesan also went 2-for-3 at the plate.
The Southwick Jv baseball team has now won five straight games, outscoring their opponents 41-9.
