BOSTON – The annual Citizens’ Legislative Seminar (CLS) was announced today, to be held on Tuesday, October 14, and Wednesday, October 15, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the State House.
State Senator Don Humason, Jr. (R-Westfield) has invited his constituents from the 2nd Hampden-Hampshire District to participate in the fall event.
A citizen seminar seeking to educate the public on how the state’s legislative process works, the CLS was established in 1976 through a joint effort between the Massachusetts State Senate and the University of Massachusetts.
The two-day event features presentations by Senators and their staff on aspects of the daily experience of legislators in the Commonwealth and on Beacon Hill. Topics of discussion usually include the history and process of the Legislature, the parliamentary role of the Clerk of the Senate, and the future of the Legislature.
“This program gives residents of our Commonwealth a hands-on experience of how state government works,” said Humason. “The seminar walks participants through the comprehensive legislative process, including how bills are heard, debated and eventually passed.”
The CLS culminates with a simulated legislative hearing and Senate session where participants are invited to use what they have learned and participate as “Senators” in the Senate Chamber in order to have a first-hand experience of the legislative process.
“I encourage all those who are interested in how our government works to participate in the next seminar.” Humason said.
Over the years, the CLS has become one of the most popular events of it’s kind on Beacon Hill, so much so that all participants must be nominated by their legislators to attend.
Humason has invited all residents in the 2nd Hampden and Hampshire District to contact his office at 413-568-1366 or send him an email at [email protected] by Thursday, August 28 in order to be nominated.
Nominations work on a first-come, first-served basis, and all participants are required to attend both sessions.
