School improvement plans presented

SOUTHWICK – Kim Sasso, principal of Woodland Elementary School and future principal of the Powder Mill School, offered a report on the two schools’ improvement plans last night.
Sasso told the Southwick-Tolland-Granville Regional School Committee yesterday that the joint school council met several times and also coordinated with Granville Village School Principal Linda Christofori.
Powder Mill student achievement strategies included analyzing historical MCAS data, collect benchmark data three times per year, and implement ubits of study in Envision, Big Ideas, and Guided Reading/Math, integrate Common Core writing standards, and provide intervention and enrichment opportunities.
“Under Personal Growth, we’ll continue to support students and staff with the transition [to the new grade configuration],” said Sasso.
Accomplishments included the piloting of Common Core math in grades six through eight and implementation of the Envisions program in grade five.
Math coaches worked with teachers and the English Language Arts program focused on the Readers/Writers Workshop model.
Sasso said the science department continued to focus on the STEM program.
At Woodland, accomplishments included full implementation of Envisions and professional development related to the curriculum as well as special education development.
The school also participated in the first year of the state kindergarten entry assessment and revamped its lunch menu.
Sasso said collaboration with Granville Village School continued.
“Granville attended several of our field trips,” she said. “And the Southwick Cultural Council supported our fourth grade trip to Springfield Symphony Hall.”
