John Mikelis

WESTFIELD-John C. Mikelis, 100, died Thursday, April 2, 2015. He was born in Westfield onflag May 24, 1914 to the late Charles and Beatrice (Jegelewicz) Mikelis. He attended Westfield schools and was a lifelong resident. He served in the Army National Guard from 1934-1941 and the U.S. Army during World War II from 1941-1946. He was a proud veteran who served 18 months overseas in Honolulu, Hawaii and Okinawa, Japan. He was a lifetime member and past chaplain of VFW 1847 and a lifetime member of American Legion Post 454. John retired in 1979 after 30 years as senior custodian at the Westfield City Hall. He was pre-deceased by the girl of his dreams, his wife of 64 years, Helen M. (Gutt) Mikelis. John leaves his son James C. Mikelis and his wife Lynn of Berlin, MA, his daughter Patricia A. McGovern and her husband Hubert of Westfield. He also leaves his grandchildren Megan, Matthew, Anne, and Joseph McGovern, Ryan Mikelis, and great grandson Connor McGovern. The funeral for John will be held on Tuesday April 7, at 9 am from the Firtion-Adams Funeral Service, 76 Broad Street, Westfield followed by a Mass at 10 am in St. Joseph’s National Catholic Church, 73 Main Street, Westfield. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Monday April 6 at the funeral home from 5-8 pm.
