John W. Gannon

WESTFIELD: flagJohn W. Gannon, 83, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 23, 2015, while in the exceptional care of the VA Medical Center (CLC & Hospice Units) in Leeds, MA. He was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan the son of the late Harold and Doris (Painter) Gannon, raised in Westfield where he attended public schools. Upon graduating Westfield High School, he enlisted in the US Navy and served his country proudly and honorably for 30 years. His distinguished record includes serving time in Korea, Vietnam, Cuba, Antarctica and Washington D.C. John was Master Chief of the Atlantic Fleet Seabees when he retired in 1982. After his Navy Career, he worked for the Cities of Westfield and West Springfield in Community Revitalization Projects. He also had a brief tenure at Westfield State College as a maintenance supervisor before fully retiring to enjoy his two passions of fly fishing and serving his fellow veterans. He volunteered for over 20 years and held numerous positions in the Fleet Reserve Association and the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). Upon his death, he was an active member in the DAV and held the position of Department Commander of which he was very proud. John was predeceased by his loving wife of 50 years, Therese (Pollard) Gannon. He is survived by his two sons, Robert and David Gannon both of Westfield, MA, daughter and son-in-law, Marie and Frank Engel of Ellington, CT, his only granddaughter Jessica Gannon also of Westfield, brothers, Paul (Bud), Little Rock, AK and Tom of Westfield, MA. He also leaves behind many extended family members and dear friends. The family extends their thanks to the Doctors and Staff at the VA Medical Center for the compassionate and wonderful care he received while there. Family and friends can gather to celebrate his life at Firtion-Adams Funeral Home, 76 Broad St., Westfield. Visiting hours will be held on Monday, April 27, 2015 from 4-7 PM. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at 9:30 a.m. at the Firtion-Adams Funeral Home followed by Mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, 27 Bartlett St., Westfield. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Southampton Rd., Westfield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Room 546 State House, Boston, MA 02133.
