Keene tops field hockey

WESTFIELD – Keene State used a 34-shot offensive barrage and got goals from three players en route to a 3-1 win over Westfield State University in a Little East Conference Field Hockey game on Saturday.
Westfield State senior goalkeeper Megan Fountaine (Scituate, Mass.) made 16 saves to keep the Owls chances alive in the contest and the Owls came up with four defensive saves, including three by Alexa Whitney (Athol, Mass.).
Keene (7-3, 4-0 LEC) got on the scoreboard first with just under nine minutes left in the first half when Sami Smith’s (Merrimack, N.H.) shot was saved by Fountaine, but Smith slid the rebound to Julia Babbitt (Haddam-Killingworth/Haddam, Conn.) at the left post who knocked home the goal.
KSC grabbed a 2-0 lead 3:21 into the second half, with Jensyn Dandenau (Berlin, N.H.) scoring off the rebound of another Owls shot.
Westfield (7-2, 3-2 LEC) withstood the Keene pressure, and rallied for a goal with 7:58 left in the game, after the Westfield sent a ball into the circle, several players battled for the loose ball before senior Meg Doherty (Mansfield, Mass.) found the back of the net with a shot from the right side.
Keene added a late goal with Smith scoring off the rebound of her own shot with 3:26 left in the game.
Gwendolyn Thayer (Frontier/Hatfield, Mass.) made three saves in net for Keene State. Keene held a 34-12 advantage in total shots and a 23-4 edge in shots on goal. Keene also held an 11-4 margin in penalty corners.
