Lady Bombers poised to make run

WESTFIELD – Westfield senior forwards Ashley Bovat and Melissa Welch have been a dynamic duo on offense the last couple years for the Lady Bombers’ soccer team.
Whether it is Welch drilling a Bovat pass into the corner of the net, or Bovat taking a cross from Welch and lacing it into the goal, the two players have made life miserable for opposing defenses.
On Sunday, Welch and Bovat will hope to unleash their attack when the eighth-seeded Bombers (9-6-2) host the No. 9 Central Golden Eagles (7-7-3). The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
“They have some quick girls up top and a good goalkeeper,” Westfield coach Keith Saltmarsh said of Central. “Hopefully we will come out successful.”
With a solid core of athletes, and a strong goaltender, senior Briana Kubik, Westfield is poised to win at the very least, their opening round game.
“We’re looking for (Briana’s) leadership on the field in the tournament,” Saltmarsh said of his senior goalie, one of three Bombers who won gold on the West girls’ soccer team last summer.
Assuming the Bombers take care of business against Central, they will then have the lofty task of trying to upset No. 1 East Longmeadow (14-2-1).
