CHICOPEE – Loretta E. (Minihan) Starr, 81, longtime Chicopee resident, passed away peacefully Monday, December 17, 2012 at the home of her daughter in Westfield, MA. Born on May 30, 1931 to the late John and Loretta (Woodworth) Minihan of CT, she lived in Chicopee and was educated in Springfield, MA and graduated from Cathedral High School.
Loretta retired from the Urban League of Springfield where she spent many years working for the Foster Grandparent Program. She was a caring and compassionate woman whose greatest joy was time spent with her family. She especially enjoyed and cherished vacations with her grandchildren. Loretta was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Chicopee for many years prior to the church closing and she served as principal of their CCD program for 18 years.
Loretta was predeceased by her husband Richard in 2004. She was a devoted mother of six children, Richard M. Starr of West Springfield, MA, Mary Ellen Berselli and her husband Jeff of Westfield, MA, Peggy Leganza and her husband Ron of Middlefield, MA, James Starr and Patrick Starr, both of Chicopee, MA, and Kathleen Kord and her husband Ted of Maui, HI. Loretta also leaves a brother, Donald Minihan of Agawam, MA, and a sister, Kathleen D’Ambrosio of Springfield, MA. She will also be greatly missed by her 10 beloved grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 27, 2012 at the Southwick-Forastiere Funeral Home, 624 College Highway, Southwick, MA, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, 30 Bartlett Street, Westfield, MA. Burial will follow at the Massachusetts Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Agawam, MA. Family & friends may gather at the funeral home on Wednesday, December 26, 2012 for calling hours from 4:00-7:00 p.m.
