MIT holds off Westfield State

WATERVILLE, MAINE – Westfield State junior center Forbasaw Nkamebo scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough as the Owls fell to MIT, 65-56 on the second day of the Colby College Women’s Basketball Classic on Sunday afternoon.
Westfield fell behind 9-0 in the first 3:55 of the game and tried to play catch up for the rest of the afternoon.
The Owls cut the lead to one point, at 24-23 on a Gabby Felix free throw with 3:54 left in the half. The Engineers led 32-27 at halftime.
Westfield hung close through the early stages of the second half. Nkamebo’s layup with 10:48 remaining in the game pulled the Owls within two points, at 47-45, but MIT responded with a 12-2 run over the next four minutes to open up the lead.
Westfield would get no closer than eight points in the final six minutes.
MIT (2-2) was led by 22 points and 10 rebounds from Sabrina Drammis. Osheiza Otori added 17 points.
Nkamebo was the only Owls in double figures with 23. Gabby Felix added nine points and Kirsy Segarra and Jen Ashton added seven apiece.
Westfield falls to 1-2 on the season. The Owls will play at Mount Holyoke on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
