Multiple crashes during wintry Saturday

WESTFIELD/SOUTHWICK/GRANVILLE–There were multiple traffic accidents during this past snowy Saturday in the city, but police fortunately reported few injuries from the incidents.

According to the Westfield Police logs, six accidents were reported from police, with all of them happening between 2 p.m. and midnight Saturday, Dec. 9. Of the accidents, one vehicle had reportedly rolled onto its side and struck a pole and another accident was caused when a vehicle reportedly struck a tree, though no one was reported injured by police.

The first accident, according to the log, was called in at 2:03 p.m., on East Mountain Road. According to the log, callers reported a black SUV that had reportedly lost control and flipped over. The vehicle was reportedly on its side against a utility pole, with the pole damaged and wires reportedly snapped. However, everyone was out of the vehicle. A tow truck was requested but police did not report anyone being transported to the hospital.

Then, a two-vehicle accident was called in a 2:12 p.m. on City View Boulevard, with no injuries or airbags being deployed. No tow trucks were requested, either.

At 2:51 p.m., another report for an accident came in at Western Avenue and Lloyds Hill Road, this time involving three vehicles. No injuries were reported by the police log and no tow trucks requested.

Police received a report of an accident at 3:29 p.m. on Parker Avenue as well, though according to the report the accident had occurred two hours prior and was in a private lot.

At 5:52 p.m., an accident was reported on Shaker Road, which involved a vehicle and a tree. However, no injuries were reported.

Then finally, another two-vehicle accident was reported at 10:37 p.m. at Holyoke Road and Springdale Road, with possible injuries. Police reported that one of the operators was transported to Baystate Noble Hospital via Westfield Fire ambulance and personnel, a tow truck was requested and a guardrail was reportedly damaged.

Outside of Westfield there were still a number of accidents reported in Southwick and the hilltowns.

According to Southwick Police Chief David Ricardi, there were four accidents reported in town. Although there were no serious injuries, one person did get transported to a local hospital for minor injuries. A total of five vehicles were towed by Interstate Towing. Ricardi added that besides the reported accidents, there were quite a few vehicles that slid off roads.

The Southwick Police Department added staff this weekend due to the expected inclement weather and Chief Ricardi wants to remind residents and people traveling through town to be just cautious and drive slow.

“We’re just asking people to use good common sense,” said Ricardi. “We don’t’ want to see people hurt.”

Minutes down the road, Granville also had two reported accidents. Both accidents were single motor vehicle accidents where the car slid off the road, including one car sliding into a guardrail. Lt. Rick Rindels said that there were no injuries from either accident.

Rindels also added that before every projected snow storm, the Granville Police Department posts on their Facebook page to remind the public about any potential safety issues on the roads.
