Air Force Airman Cameron J. Duncan graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Duncan is the son of Michael Duncan of Colchester, Conn., and Kelly Duncan of Southwick. He is a 2011 graduate of Southwick-Tolland Regional High School

Air Force Reserve Airman Michael G. Sillman graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.
The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Sillman is the son of Thurza Sillman of Gunn Mountain Road, Ashuelot, N.H., and grandson of Phyllis Woodger of Granby Road, Granville. He is 2004 graduate of Granby Memorial High School, Conn. He earned a bachelor’s degree in 2010 from the University of Connecticut, Storrs, Conn.

Local Students Graduate from Western New England University
SPRINGFIELD – The following students received degrees from Western New England University on August 15, 2013.
Andrea L. Allard of Westfield graduated with a Master of Business Administration degree.

American International College welcomes new students
SPRINGFIELD – More than 500 incoming freshmen and their families arrived at American International College in Springfield, Mass., Monday, September 2 for the start of Welcome Week.

Classes began on Wednesday, September 4.
Zachary Beaver, director of Student Empowerment and Leadership Development at AIC, said there were more than 20 events in five days, including some of the most memorable events students will attend during their time at the college. “An essential experience for every new student, Welcome Week helps students make the transition from summertime student-to-be to first-time AIC student.”

Student-athletes inducted into 3.0 Club at American International College

SPRINGFIELD – More than 150 student-athletes were recognized for their academic achievement during a ceremony at American International College in Springfield, Mass. The students were inducted into the 3.0 Club during a ceremony in the Griswold Theatre.
The 3.0 club honors student-athletes who have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better after at least one year of enrollment at American International College.
Jason Burnusuz of Westfield, a member of the AIC Men’s Soccer team, is a Accounting major.
Rebecca Hardy of Westfield, a member of the AIC Women’s Indoor and Outdoor Track team, is a Health Sciences major.
Cole Ludorf of Southwick, a member of the AIC Men’s Wrestling team, is a New Media major.
Marguerite Pratt of Granville, a member of the AIC Women’s Rugby team, is a Physical Therapy major.
Sinead Smith of Westfield, a member of the AIC Women’s Lacrosse team, is a Nursing major.
“Athlete stereotypes just aren’t true anymore,” said Richard F. Bedard, director of athletics at AIC. “Our student-athletes achieve in the classroom and the community.
Bedard said by having the induction ceremony at the start of the school year it allows the new students to see the accomplishments of the upperclassmen and give them something to strive for.
Jill McCarthy Payne, a criminal justice professor at AIC and chair of the faculty athletic board, said the club is one the college takes pride in. “Too often student athletics has a negative connotation, but at AIC we are proud that our athletes are also very good students and campus leaders,” she said.

Westfield resident Heather M Colburn named to Binghamton University Dean’s List
BINGHAMTON, NY – Heather M Colburn of Westfield received academic honors from the Decker School of Nursing at Binghamton University by making the University’s Dean’s List for the Spring 2013 semester. Binghamton University is one of the four university centers of the State University of New York. Known for the excellence of its students, faculty, staff and programs, Binghamton enrolls close to 15,000 students in programs leading to bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees. Its curriculum, founded in the liberal arts, has expanded to include selected professional and graduate programs.

Area Student Inducted into National Biological Honor Society at Susquehanna University
SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Abigail Johnson, of Granville, Mass, was recently inducted into Beta Beta Beta (TriBeta) National Biological Honor Society at Susquehanna University. Beta Beta Beta is an organization dedicated to improving and furthering student knowledge in biological areas, as well as emphasizing the importance of scientific research in student learning. The society was found in 1922 at Oklahoma City University by Frank G. Brooks and a group of his students. It now includes over 200,000 active members and 670 chapters throughout the United States. Johnson, a junior majoring in biology and neuroscience, is a 2011 graduate of Northwest Catholic High School and the daughter of Don Johnson and Martha Lilja-Johnson.

Hunter graduates
Marissa Hunter graduated from Kossuth High School in Mississippi. She is the granddaughter of retired Westfield High School teacher, Donald Hunter. In August she started her college education at Ole Miss. In the past she has won a gold and silver medal in the junior Olympics as an expert on the rifle team. She will on the rifle team at Ole Miss.

Brendon Ray enrolls at NTID
ROCHESTER, NY – Brendon Ray of Russell has enrolled in Rochester Institute of Technology’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf, the nation’s first and largest technological college for deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
He is a graduate of Willie Ross School for the Deaf in Longmeadow and the son of Michelle and Thomas Ray of Russell, Mass. RIT is internationally recognized for academic leadership in computing, engineering, imaging technology, sustainability and fine and applied arts, in addition to unparalleled support services for more than 1,250 students who are deaf or hard of hearing. RIT enrolls more than 18,000 full- and part-time students in more than 200 career-oriented and professional programs, and its cooperative education program is one of the oldest and largest in the nation. NTID, one of nine colleges of RIT, was established by Congress in 1965 to provide college opportunities for deaf and hard-of-hearing students who were underemployed in technical fields. More than 125 interpreters, tutors and note-takers support students in and out of the classroom.

Boley matriculates into Hamilton
Clinton, N.Y. – Shannon C. Boley, daughter of Kathleen Shea of Westfield and Christopher Boley of Woodstock, recently matriculated as a first-year student at Hamilton College. Boley, a graduate of Westfield High School, was selected from a pool of 5,017 applicants to the college, and joins a class of 492. Hamilton College is a highly selective residential college offering a rigorous liberal arts curriculum. Students are challenged to think, write and speak critically, creatively and analytically, so that upon graduation they may distinguish themselves in both their professions and their communities.

Thibault attending Plymouth State
PLYMOUTH, NH – Joseph Thibault of Southwick is a first year student at Plymouth State University (NH). Plymouth State University is a regional comprehensive university offering a rich, student-focused learning environment with an enrollment of approximately 4,300 undergraduate and approximately 3,000 graduate students. Colby-Sawyer College names Kyleigh Lund to Dean’s List
NEW LONDON, NH – Colby-Sawyer College has named Kyleigh Lund from Chester to the Dean’s List for academic achievement during the 2013 spring semester. To qualify for the Dean’s List, students must achieve a grade-point average of 3.50 or higher on a 4.0 scale while carrying a minimum of 12 credit hours in graded courses. White enrolled at St. Lawrence
CANTON, N.Y. – St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York, welcomes Olivia K. White of Southwick as a member of the class of 2017. Some 634 first-year students from 30 U.S. states, including a record 72 international students, have joined the St. Lawrence student body. Each first-year student participates in St. Lawrence University’s innovative First-Year Program – one of the oldest living-learning programs in the country – helping students make successful transitions from high school to college. Students live together and are taught by faculty teams, developing the writing, speaking, and research skills needed for college. Army National Guard Soldier Promoted
LATHAM, N.Y. – Major General Patrick A. Murphy, The Adjutant General for the State of New York, announces the promotion of members of the New York Army National Guard in recognition of their capability for additional responsibility and leadership. Platt makes Goodwin College Dean’s List

EAST HARTFORD, CT – Goodwin College is pleased to congratulate student Lindsay Platt on earning a spot on the Dean’s List for the Summer 2013 Session. Platt, a student from Tolland, performed very well academically during the session in a challenging set of courses.To qualify for the Dean’s List, a student must maintain a minimum 3.5 GPA and be registered for at least six credits during a given academic session.
