One in critical condition following Thursday morning crash

WESTFIELD—One person remains in critical condition following an accident that closed down a portion of East Mountain Road Thursday morning.

The two-vehicle accident that occurred on Thursday, Dec. 14 was first reported at 7:38 a.m., according to Westfield Police Capt. Michael McCabe. The accident resulted in injuries to both operators, including one that suffered “significant injuries” according to police, and who is currently in critical condition.

One operator of a vehicle involved was transported to Baystate Medical Center via Westfield Fire ambulance and personnel for what McCabe previously described as “significant injuries.” The other operator also sustained injuries according to police, though they were reported as minor and the person had transported themselves to an area hospital.

As of Friday afternoon, Dec. 15, the victim with what police described as “significant injuries” was still at Baystate Medical Center in “critical condition,” according to a representative from the hospital.

According to a statement released by police, the operator whose injuries sustained were serious “appears to have lost control” of their vehicle and “crossed into the path of oncoming traffic,” striking the other vehicle involved.

The road was still closed for a portion of the morning Thursday, until police opened it later in the early afternoon.

Police Capt. McCabe said on Friday that the accident remains under investigation by both Westfield Police and the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section (CARS).
