Open house provides inside look at first responders

SOUTHWICK – It is getting close to that time of the year where Southwick residents will be able to get a closer look at the daily lives of first responders. On Saturday April 29, the 2nd Annual Public Safety Open House is taking place at the Town of Southwick Safety Campus, located right on Depot Street.

Both the Southwick Fire Department and Police Department will be giving tours to citizens so they can gain more knowledge about the technology that the staff uses regularly.

The open house is a way for the police and fire departments to interact with the public in a comfortable setting. This particular event is always one that first responders look forward to.

“We encourage people to come out and spend the day with us and see the equipment,” said Southwick Police Lt. Kevin Bishop. “It’s a benefit for the community and also a benefit for the officers.”

Southwick Fire Chief Russ Anderson added to Bishop’s statement.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for the public to see the different aspects of public safety,” said Anderson.

There will also be a number of activities and events for the public. A K-9 demonstration will occur with Officer Tom Krutka and his K-9, Jax, at Noon. Smokey the Bear and Sparky the Fire Dog will also be on hand to occasionally visit people.

Police officers will be installing car seats for children, if you schedule an appointment ahead of time by calling 413-569-5348, ext. 609.

The police will also have an informational exhibit on display called “Hidden in Plain Sight” which can benefit any parent that wants to get educated about drugs in their home.

For the fire department, there will be a kids level firefighter challenge and a fire safety trailer. There will also be a demonstration on how to properly use their cold water rescue suits.

Other responders present at the open house include the Southwick animal shelter, Emergency Management Team, and Local Emergency Planning Committee who will all  be able to answer any questions from the public. Dog trainers will be available if there are any questions concerning canine behavior.

Rite-Aid Pharmacy will also be at the event to administer Flu and Pneumonia shots to anyone that needs them.
