CHAMPIONSHIP BOUT: Round three begins at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
After trading blows in the regular season, top seed Westfield State University and second seed Framingham State University will settle their accounts in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball championship game at Westfield State’s Woodward Center, with an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament on the line.
Westfield enters the game with an 18-8 overall record, posting an 11-1 mark in conference play. Framingham comes in with a 20-4 mark, a program record for wins in a season
The Owls topped Framingham 90-77 in Westfield on January 11 behind 24 points from senior guard Jill Valley. Framingham edged the Owls, 75-71 in Framingham on February 4. A three pointer by Raegen Mulherin with a minute left proved the decisive blow.
Not only is it the rubber match for this season, it’s a rematch of last season’s MASCAC title tilt, in which Westfield prevailed 92-86.
Westfield’s Valley is the league’s leading scorer at more than 22 points per game, and is coming off historic back-to-back games in which she scored a school-record and NCAA-season-high 52 points in the regular season finale, and 39 points in the Owls’ semifinal win. Westfield ranks second the nation in scoring at nearly 90 points per game. Sophomores Kierra McCarthy (11.7 ppg) and Lucy Barrett (10.2 ppg) and senior Kirsy Segarra (9.2 ppg) add depth to the Owls’ scoring attack.
Westfield seeks a second-straight title and is playing in its third straight championship game.
Framingham has the circuit’s top rebounder in 6-1 center Alycia Rackliffe (10.6) per game, the top three-point shooter in Lauren Donahue, who connects at a 40.6 percent clip. Mulherin added 13.6 points per game. The Rams are the MASCAC’s top defensive team, yielding just 56 points per game to their foes, and holding opponents under 32 percent shooting with the help of Rackliffe, who blocks more than three shots per game.
Both teams narrowly escaped their semifinal matchups, with Westfield defeating Bridgewater, 97-95 in double overtime, and Framingham needing another late triple from Mulherin to get past MCLA, 60-59.
