Owls track soar to 2nd

SPRINGFIELD – Three Westfield State student athletes won their events at the Massasoit Classic indoor track and field meet on Saturday, leading the Owls to a second-place finish at the eight-team meet at the Springfield College Field House.
Senior Naloti Palma (Westborough/Westborough, Mass.) won the weight throw with a toss of 15.83m (51-11.25). Classmate Juliana Miller (Reading/Reading, Mass.) placed third in the throw with a mark of 13.40m (43′-11.75″).
Freshman Anna Grudzinski (Woodstock Academy/Dayville, Conn.) topped the 60 meter hurdles final in a time of 9.93 seconds.
Sophomore Ashley Craig (Westford Academy/Groton, Conn.) claimed the pole vault tile with a height of 11′-1″.
Westfield State’s 4x 200 relay team also won that event with a time of 1:51.35.
The Owls placed second with a total of 146.5 points. Host Springfield (193.5) won the meet while Amherst College (138.5) took third place.
The Owls will be back in action next Saturday, traveling to the Doris and Walt Miga Invitational at Utica (N.Y.) College.

MEN’S RESULTS
SPRINGFIELD – Westfield State University senior high jumper Travon Godette (Mahar/Orange, Mass.) broke a 27-year old school record by clearing 6′-9.75″ in winning the event at the Massasoit Classic indoor track and field meet on Saturday.
Godette’s efforts helped lead the Owls to a third-place finish at the eight-team meet held at the Springfield College Field House.
Godette’s leap bettered the old mark of 6′-9.5″ set by Westfield State Athletic Hall of Famer Jim Forrest’90 in 1989.
Godette cleared the record height on his first try; he missed in three subsequent attempts to go over the bar at 6-11.75. The big jump puts Godette sixth on the NCAA Division III qualifying performance list as of the moment. Godette also placed second in the triple jump with a mark of 12.70 meters (41′-8″).
Westfield State also got strong performances from senior Zack Delisle (Chicopee/Chicopee, Mass.), who won the pole vault with a mark of 15′-5.5″. Delise vaulted in to 10th place on the the current performance list. His brother Patrick (Chicopee/Chicopee, Mass.), a sophomore, placed third at the Massasoit Classic with a height of 13′-11.25″.
Mike Stender (Amherst/Amherst, Mass.) won the 500 meters in 1:08.12. He led a Owls group that placed 1-3-4-5 in the race with Jeremy Forgue Chicopee/Belchertown, Mass.), Esteafan Jack (Lincoln-Sudbury/Boston, Mass.) and Tevin Cintron (Diman Vocational/Fall River, Mass.) chasing him across the finish line.
Westfield also won the 4×400 relay in a time of 3:34.92.
The Owls placed third at the meet with 121 points, finishing behind host Springfield (127) and Amherst (124). Westfield will be back on the track next Saturday at the Doris and Walt Miga Invitational at Utica (NY) College. – Courtesy of Westfield State Sports
