Monday, April 14, 2014
1:11 a.m.: motor vehicle violation, Springfield Road, a patrol officer reports he observed a vehicle operating at a high rate of speed and used radar to determine that it was traveling at 68 mph in a 40 mph zone, the vehicle was stopped and the operator’s license was found to have been revoked as an habitual traffic offender, Isaac Partlow, 33, of 51 Allendale St., Springfield, was arrested for operating a motor vehicle with a license revoked as an habitual traffic offender and for speeding;
10:04 a.m.: explosive hazard, Park River Drive, a caller reports that she opened the storm door of a residence to leave pamphlets and noticed a pronounced odor of gas but nobody came to the door, the responding firefighters reports natural gas was detected in a dangerous concentration, forcible entry was made and the valve for a burner on the stove was found to be partially open without ignition, the residence was ventilated, a resident returned and was advised of the problem;
10:22 a.m.: suspicious person, South Maple Street, a patrol officer reports he encountered a known woman who is the subject of an outstanding warrant, the officer reports it was impractical to arrest the woman because the officer would not have been able to safeguard all the property in her possession, the woman was advised to got to the district court to resolve her issue;
10:33 a.m.: assist citizen, Bush Street, a resident came to the station to request an escort while he recovers his daughter’s property from a Bush Street address, the responding officer reports he assisted the woman as she gathered her possessions at the address;
10:47 a.m.: city ordinance violation, Bates Road, a community policing officer reports he followed up on an investigation into unregistered motor vehicles stored on private property, the CP officer reports one of the residents showed him proof that his vehicle had been registered but the officer found that another tenant’s vehicle had not been registered, a city ordinance violation citation was left for the violator;
1:00 p.m.: fraud, Fox Hill Drive, a resident came to the station to complain that his personal information was used to file a tax return, the case was referred to the financial crimes unit of the Detective Bureau;
2:33 p.m.: vehicular fire, Notre Dame Street, a caller reports a milk truck is on fire, dual response dispatched, the responding firefighters report flames were showing from the engine compartment upon arrival, the fire was extinguished, there was no spill from the truck which was towed from the roadway;
2:36 p.m.: fire, Springfield Road, a caller reports mulch is burning between two businesses and the fire is spreading, the responding firefighters report the fire was extinguished;
3:00 p.m.: animal complaint, Falley Drive, a resident brought a shih tzu dog found in the Falley Drive neighborhood the previous day to the municipal animal shelter;
7:28 p.m.: larceny, a resident came to the station to report that he has seen a person riding his stolen bicycle, the responding officer reports that the man said that he did not report his bicycle had been stolen when the crime occurred but has twice seen a person riding it, the man said that he had been unable to stop the rider both times he spotted the bike, officer was advised to be on the lookout for a yellow Schwinn bicycle with a pink cupholder;
9:20 p.m.: accident, Western Avenue, a caller reports a crash, the responding officer reports an eastbound operator said that a tire blew and he was unable to control the car which crossed into the westbound lane and the path of a vehicle which struck his car, two witnesses reported hearing the tire blow and observing the crash, the officer reports that both vehicles are total losses and were towed from the scene;
9:25 p.m.: suspicious person, Elm Street, a caller reports seeing a man drop a handgun on the ground before going into a pizza restaurant, the responding officer reports the man was pat frisked for weapons and found to have none, the man said that he had dropped his cellphone;
9:27 p.m.: breaking and entering, Main Street, a resident came to the station to complain that his vehicle was broken into on Main Street, the responding officer reports the man said that his vehicle had been unlocked when it was entered and his girlfriend’s purse was stolen;
11:07 p.m.: assault, George Street, a resident came to the station to report she was assaulted, the responding officer report he observed signs of minor injuries, the woman provided the first name of the man who was not found in the area;

Tuesday, April 15, 2014
7:08 a.m.: assist other police department, a supervisory officer requests that an officer be dispatched across the Holyoke border to assist police in that city with traffic as they deal with a crash in their city, Holyoke officers were able to take control of the traffic issues in less than half an hour;
1:15 p.m.: larceny, Robinson Drive, a DPW worker reports that a manhole cover has apparently been stolen, the caller does not require a formal report but wants the larceny to be documented;
2:03 p.m.: animal complaint, Westfield Animal Shelter, 178 Apremont Way, a resident came to the shelter to surrender three intact dogs, a male beagle, a female beagle and a male English Pointer;
2:16 p.m.: weather complaint, Belmont Street, multiple callers provide conflicting reports about the impact of a tree which has apparently fallen on electrical wires causing them to arc, dual response dispatched and DPW and G&E were also notified, the responding officers report the large tree fell across the roadway and struck a vehicle, officers reported the tree was leaning on primary electrical wires but no electrical arcing was found although firefighters dealt with a small fire before clearing the scene, DPW and G&E workers completed their response and an officer reported they had cleared the scene at 3:09 p.m.;
5:47 p.m.: assist resident, Powder Mill Village, 126 Union St., a caller reports she has locked her keys inside her running vehicle, the responding firefighters report entry was gained;
7:06 p.m.: weather complaint, Lloyds Hill Road, a caller reports a tree is in the roadway near the top of the hill, the responding officer reports he was able to remove the tree;
7:42 p.m.: assist citizen, Powder Mill Village, 126 Union St., a caller requests an officer to assist as he gathers possession from his girlfriend’s residence, the responding officer report the man was served with a protective order and it was explained to him, the man said that he needed all his belongings which were inside the apartment, the officer reports that the woman three times denied that she had any of the man’s possessions despite being advised that the man claimed that they had been bagged in the apartment, an officer who had dealt with the couple a few day previously came and told the woman that he knew the man’s belongings were inside because he had seen them there previously, the woman surrendered five trash bags containing the man’s possession, a superior officer reports a criminal complaint for contempt is pending;
8:49 p.m.: accident, South Maple Street at Riverside Drive, a caller reports a vehicle operating at excessive speed northbound on South Maple Street lost control and struck a tree in the front yard of a house, the responding office reports the operator was not injured but appeared to be highly intoxicated and failed a field sobriety test, Michael J. Birdsall, 26, of 40 Orange St., was arrested for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and a marked lanes violation;
9:55 p.m.: accident, Springdale Road, a caller reports a pickup truck struck a tree, a call was also received from the operator who said that the children in the vehicle appear to be okay, she is bleeding from an unknown source and she is trapped in the vehicle, dual response dispatched, the responding firefighters report they assisted two uninjured persons exit the vehicle before the operator was disentangled and removed with medical precautions, all three occupants were transported to Noble Hospital where all three were treated and released.
