LONGMEADOW – A one-time beast among Division III high school golfers, St. Mary’s has reclaimed its throne, sort of.
St. Mary finished second at the Western Massachusetts D3 golf championship Monday at Franconia Golf Course. The Saints (342 points) knocked off defending champ Hopkins Academy (345), finishing only behind overall team champ Pioneer Valley Regional (322).
Caleb Farnham, of Hopkins won the individual crown with a 76.
Four St. Mary golfers finished in the top 25 – Matt Wurster (82, tied 9th), Dom Ceccarini (85, tied 15th), Ashton Bourbonnais (85, tied 15th), and Harry Reed (90, tied 22nd). Saints’ Johnathan Spear shot a 96, and Ryan Gendron finished with a 108.
Westfield Voc-Tech’s Matt King placed sixth with an 80.
The state championship will be held Oct. 27 at Black Swan Country Club in Georgetown.

Westfield’s Sebastian Soendergaard finished tied with two others for runner-up at Monday’s Division 1 championship at Wyantenuck Country Club at Great Barrington. Soendergaard shot a 73.
Stephen Hunt, of Minnechaug won the event with a 72. The Falcons were first overall with 307 points.
Ryan Towle (79), Dan Hickson (83), Connor Sullivan (87), Colin Dunn (89), and John Kiefer (92) also competed for Westfield, which placed fourth (322 points) as a team.
Longmeadow (313) and Agawam (319) were 2-3.

Longhi cracks top 10
Southwick’s James Longhi tied for 10th with an 83 at Monday’s Division 2 championship at Taconic Golf Course in Williamstown.
Joe Brosseau shot a first-place 76 for Cathedral, also the overall team winner with 324 points. Southwick was seventh (361).
Rams’ Chris Molta (89), Nick Labodycz (94), Bradley Durand (95), Joe Stratton (96), and Patrick Mahoney (113).

Gators sink Gaels

Gateway 5, Holyoke Catholic 2

Josh Baillargeon scored two goals, and John Rooney, Nick Cooper, and Nick McLaughlin had one apiece for tournament-bound Gateway (7-4-3), which outshot visiting Holyoke Catholic 17-7 Monday.
McLaughlin, Ben VanHeynigen. Linus Bohlsen, and Max Vaskchenko each had an assist for the Gators.
Gateway goalie Spencer Rock finished with three saves.

Mustangs edge Rams

Tori Richburg had eight saves, and allowed just one goal for Southwick on the road.

Desi Otero scored at the 28:31 mark of the first half on a pass from Liz Marcyoniak, and Westfield held on to defeat visiting Agawam Monday.
Karly Mastello (1 save) earned a shutout in net for the Bombers.
Westfield’s Olivia Chaoush and Leighanne Sullivan delivered solid effort up front, and Morgan Shia was strong in the backfield.
