Sanders, WHS prevail

NORTHAMPTON – Westfield’s Morgan Sanders won the 55 meter hurdles in 9.09 to help lead the Bombers’ girls’ indoor track and field team past Chicopee 68-27 in a PVIAC meet late Friday night at Smith College. The boys’ team fell to the Pacers, 51-39.
Jordanio Oquendo (WHS) won the 300 meter dash in 37.36, and teammate Ryan Prenosil was second (37.44). Bombers’ boys’ Matt Roy and Ben Jury placed 2-3 in the mile with times of 4:59.18 and 5:02.41, respectively.
Also of note, in the girls’ shot put, Westfield’s Amanda Hall finished runner-up (27-8.5) with teammate Mia Neuzil closely behind in third (27-2.25).
Holyoke Catholic’s Julie and Bill Carroll, both of Southwick, continued to dominate the distance events.
Julie, a junior, won the 2-mile race in 11:56.30. Bill, a freshman, was third in the 1-miler (4:58.98).
Both Gaels are former St. Mary Saints, who advanced to Western Mass and state championships a year ago as All-Leaguers.
After the individual results were tallied, and the team results shook out, the Westfield girls’ squad defeated Chicopee 68-27 to improve to 4-2 overall. The Bombers’ boys fell 51-39, and tumbled to 2-4.

Easton rises for Saints
Turners Falls 46, St. Mary 33

Maddy Chmyzinski (17 points) and Aliyah Sanders (12) reached double-digits scoring to boost Turners past STM late Friday night.
Alissa Easton had a monster effort for St. Mary, scoring 15 points. Saints’ Lauren Chapdelaine and Karissa Foley finished with eight apiece.
