Westfield

Update from Representative Velis

Good morning Westfield! I hope you’re weekend is off to a great start! Here’s the update from the past week.

Thursday Westfield Technical Academy received their official certification from the Federal Aviation Administration. This is a huge accomplishment and the result of the hard work of countless people. Westfield Technical Academy is only the third high school in the nation to receive this certification. Representatives from the FAA offices at Bradley International Airport and in Washington DC traveled to Westfield to present the certification.

In addition, Gulfstream Aerospace donated $100,000 to help fund the technical academy’s aviation maintenance program. This money comes in addition to the $200,000 previously committed by Gulfstream. Thank you to Gulfstream for the funds that I am sure will go a long way to making sure this program is a success.

I cannot say enough about how awesome this program is. There is a need for skilled workers in this industry. Westfield Technical Academy is playing an important role in workforce development by helping to close that skills gap. The Technical Academy and the City of Westfield should be extremely proud of this truly incredible program.

Also on Thursday, I had the pleasure of touring Westfield State University’s new science center along with the state Secretary of Education, James Peyser. The facility is extremely impressive. The new technology they were able to incorporate will certainly enhance the learning experience of the students that pass through. It is a much needed addition to the University’s campus and will serve the students and the community well.

I hope to see some of you around town this weekend! Westfield Food Fest will be happening Friday through Sunday. I’m looking forward to some good food and entertainment in downtown Westfield. Hope to see you there!

Also this afternoon in Southampton there will be the WMASS Project 22 Motorcycle Run. It starts at 12 from the Harley Davidson in Southampton and finishes up at The Cove. All of the proceeds go to benefit Project 22 and local nonprofit One Call Away. Both of these organizations work to address the epidemic of veteran suicide in our country, a cause that is very dear to me. If you can, get out and support!

That’s it for this week. Thanks for reading! As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions, comments, or concerns at [email protected] or my district office phone 413-472-3920.
