Westfield MGM events could help those seeking employment

WESTFIELD—If you or a high school senior are looking for a job at MGM Springfield, then there are events coming to Westfield that might help you reach that goal.

Representatives from MGM Springfield will be coming to three locations in Westfield during the first full week of November to provide an employment workshop for residents. The events will be occurring at Westfield Technical Academy, Westfield High School and the Westfield Senior Center, and will provide age-specific classes and information related to careers at MGM Springfield.

The two events at the schools will be held for students who are expected to be graduating, according to Wanda Gispert, Vice President of Talent and Workforce Development for MGM Springfield.

“The reason we decided to continue outreach to high schools is because graduation is in June and that’s when we have the biggest mass hiring,” she said.

The first event for students is at Westfield Technical Academy on Nov. 8, starting at 7:45 a.m., and the second will occur at Westfield High School the following day, Nov. 9, also at 7:45 a.m.

These events, according to Gispert, will include help with resume building, interview skills and a course on luxury guest services. The entire event will last about 3 hours and will include attendance by the Superintendent of Schools Stefan Czaporowski.

Gispert said that part of the appeal for Westfield’s students are the vocational educations provided through the school system, particularly culinary skills, which can translate to careers within MGM.

“They’re really getting training from day one that they will be ready,” she said.

According to Gispert, almost 500 students have registered for these two events.

The third event, which will be aimed toward parents and adults looking at the possibility of an MGM career, will occur at the Westfield Senior Center on Noble Street on Nov. 9, starting at 6 p.m.

This free event, which is scheduled to last about 2 and a half hours and is sponsored by the Greater Westfield Chamber of Commerce, is going to focus on positions available for those over 21, including gaming.

In addition, those in attendance will be provided with free classes taught by Dr. Stacy McIntosh, author of three books that include topics on job search skills, including interviewing, applications, resumes and the search itself. An appearance is also expected by Westfield Mayor Brian Sullivan, according to Gispert.

According to Gispert, MGM Springfield has 3,000 positions that they are seeking applicants for, with 80 percent of those positions being full-time, with benefits.
