NORTHBOROUGH – Like the summer temps, the Westfield Babe Ruth Baseball 14U team (Wolf Pack) is heating up at the right time.
Westfield split its double header in the Mid-Summer World Series Tuesday, losing to GBG (Garciaparra Baseball Group) Hawks 7-2 before shutting out the Central Mass Cubs 4-0.
In the first game, Westfield wasted a solid effort from pitcher Josh Lis, who allowed just three hits and three runs through four innings. Lis struck out one batter and hit a double at the plate. Matt Pelletier singled and drove in two runs.
In their victory over the Central Mass Cubs, Westfield received a complete game shutout by Colin Scanlon. Scanlon tossed 75 pitches in a three-hitter, striking out three and walking none.
Scanlon, Pelletier, and Colby Gazda all hit doubles against Central Mass. Gazda finished with two RBIs.
Westfield’s defense turned two double plays against the Cubs.
Notes: In a unique twist, the Westfield coaching staff allowed the Wolf Pack players to handle coaching duties – all the way from setting lineups to coaching the bases – to get a better understanding of baseball knowledge against Central Mass.
“It forced them to think,” Westfield manager Matt Avery said. “It was an interesting experiment. It forced them to concentrate – and they did.”
Westfield returns to action for its final game of pool play early Wednesday morning against MoJo Baseball Club with the playoffs beginning later in the day.
