Good Neighbor Fund encourages requests for energy assistance

BOSTON – Although the last evidence of the harsh winter is melting away and spring has sprung, the sponsoring energy companiesof the Massachusetts Good Neighbor Energy Fundcontinue to encourage those in need to apply for energy assistance by visiting their local Salvation Army Corps Community Center. The energy companies understand that the need does not end with the cold weather. Families can request assistance with their energy bills even when the warmer weather arrives.
The Massachusetts Good Neighbor Energy Fund is a safety net for families who are in temporary crisis and do not qualify for federal and state fuel assistance programs such as LIHEAP. Households whose gross income falls between 60 and 80 percent of the state’s median income levels qualify for this program. For example, a household size of 2 would need to have a total gross yearly income of between $42,654 and $56,872 to qualify. Thisyear’s Fund disbursement is $275 per eligible household per heating season.
“The generosity of Massachusettsresidents as well as the giving programs of the Fund’s sponsoring energy companies continue to warm our neighbors across the state,” said Virginia Anthony of Columbia Gas of Massachusetts and Chairperson of the 2015 Good Neighbor Energy Fund campaign. “However, donations for this year’s campaign are winding down so we ask that families who are having trouble making ends meet visit a Salvation Army Community Centersoon.” Anthony also encouraged those who think they might qualify to visit the Fund’s website a www.magoodneighbor.org for more information.
The Fund’s campaign relies on the generosity of individuals, families and local corporations for support. Massachusetts residents who wish to support the Fund can “Give the Gift of Warmth” by making a donation online at www.magoodneighbor.org or by mailing a check payable to “The Good Neighbor Energy Fund”, c/o The Salvation Army, 25 Shawmut Road, Canton, Massachusetts, 02021-1408.
