As the daughter of a Korean War casualty, I understand Memorial Day’s meaning all too well, and my heart goes out to all those who have lost a relative or a friend defending this great country.
I thank the veterans groups (your service is greatly appreciated) and private citizens who provide the venues that allow us to honor our heroes – the parade, the ceremonies, and the tributes.
Further, thank you to all the Westfield citizens who attend the events, showing they are proud to be Americans. I am proud to stand next to you.
REGARDING CITY BUSINESS
I voted last night to appoint a Facilities Director. Previously, I voted against a new Facilities Department, against the establishment of the Facilities Director’s position, and against any funds for the new department. I lost to the vote of the majority of Councilors on each occasion.
I am now in search of the next best alternative. My goal now is to have the Facilities Director’s salary of $57,000 replace the $326,000 we are now paying Siemens AG to oversee building maintenance, most of which involves school buildings.
I will, therefore, be voting against paying any money to Siemens AG beyond June 30, 2015.
Stan Hentnick admirably oversaw our school buildings for many years, but was not replaced after he retired. At present our custodial cost for all municipal buildings is about $2.5 million.
In addition we have full-time technicians and tradespersons employed by the school department. At a meeting last year promises were made that many departments would work together to limit new hirings with regard to facilities management. Those promises need to be fulfilled.
