Town seeks members for sewer committee

SOUTHWICK – The Town of Southwick Sewer Implementation Committee is seeking new members.
Following the rejection of three sewer-related articles at the Spring Town Meeting, The Board of Selectmen want to ramp up the committee, which serves solely as an advisory committee to the Board, which also acts as the Southwick Sewer Commission.
Board Chairman Joseph Deedy said there is no particular criteria to become a SIC member.
“I just want people who are really interested in the sewers,” said Deedy. “We have enough scientists and engineers – I’m looking for interested residents with common sense.”
There is no limit to the number of members the SIC can have but Deedy said he hopes for an additional four members, plus Department of Public Works Director Randy Brown.
“I’d like to have eight members, including Randy,” said Deedy.
Brown was asked to be a permanent member of the SIC at the last selectmen meeting.
“He attends all the meetings already and they need DPW input,” Deedy said.
The SIC, once regrouped, would decide how often it meets and would be tasked with working with the town on the next steps for Phase II of sewer implementation, which includes the Powder Mill Road area because of a mandate to hook the school campus to the sewers.
“No matter what, we have to bring sewers to the schools,” said Deedy. “I know there are people on Powder Mill who do want sewers, but I don’t know if there is enough.”
Interested residents are asked to send a letter of interest and resume to the Board of Selectmen by noon on July 10.
