WESTFIELD – Police were alerted at 3:30 a.m. Thursday morning to a burglary in progress at a Westfield Mobil gas station.
When police arrived at the 162 Southampton Road location, they found a shattered front door.
A safe was stolen and the cash register had been emptied.
The store manager, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the safe contained an undisclosed amount of cash.
A clerk, who also preferred not to be named, said an employee arrived to open the business at 5 a.m. and found four police cars at the service station.
According to police records, officers initially had difficulty locating the keyholder for the alarm company.
The suspect, who was caught on surveillance video, in images obtained by The Westfield News, is described as a white bald male, six feet tall, 250 pounds who was wearing a blue polo shirt, black shorts with a white stripe and white shoes.
The suspect is seen carrying the safe out of back of the store. Police found a sledge hammer and crowbar inside the store, which allegedly the suspect left behind, according to police documents.
