SOUTHWICK – Work was completed this week on the Berkshire Avenue Pump Station conversion.
Department of Public Works Director Randy Brown said the town upgraded from traditional pumps to submersible ones.
‘We have had issues with rags and cigarette butts getting in the pump,” said Brown.
There are two pumps in the station and the town has been using just one.
‘We’ve been running one pump for over a year now because it was not working, and that’s not a good idea,” Brown said. “It’s not ideal. You need a backup in case one is not working properly.”
The new pumps came online Friday and will eliminate the issues of clogging from debris.
“The submersible pump will kind of chew up rags and cigarettes,” said Brown.”
Although residents will not see any change in service because of the upgrade, which was funded by an appropriation at Town Meeting last year, the station will work better.
“They will be more reliable and efficient,” said Brown.
