HUNTINGTON – Mary Carey, the Communications Director for the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office has released the name of the victim in a tree-cutting accident in Huntington on October 1.
Stephen Griffin, 44, of Westfield, died while cutting down a tree on Goss Hill Road in Huntington. Carey said no foul play is suspected.
The town’s police chief, Robert Garriepy, said Griffin was with family chopping down trees for firewood in a remote wooded area of town off Goss Hill Road at about 3:15 p.m. Thursday when he was “crushed” by a hanging limb in the tree. Garriepy said Griffin’s teenage son, who was with him at the time, witnessed the accident.
Huntingon police and firefighters rushed to the accident scene off Route 112, and the Hilltown Community Ambulance transported Griffin to Noble Hospital in Westfield, where he was pronounced dead.
A medical helicopter was requested but then canceled after emergency workers attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation at the scene.
Garriepy called the death “a tragic accident.”
