G&E Selects Neighborhoods for High-Speed Internet Service

WESTFIELD — The residents of three neighborhoods in Westfield have been selected to submit applications to Westfield Gas and Electric for Whip City Fiber, Westfield’s high-speed fiber optic internet service.   Once a sufficient number of applications from these neighborhoods are received via the whipcityfiber.com website, construction will be slated to begin.

This announcement comes shortly after a campaign to assess general interest in high-speed internet for Westfield. “We’ve had a tremendous response to our I Want Fiber! campaign,” commented WG+E General Manager Dan Howard. “Close to 4,000 people have contacted us to tell us they want Whip City Fiber.”

The service is currently available to about 240 homes and businesses in a pilot area that was constructed and launched late last year. For this next phase of development, WG+E selected three neighborhoods that showed strong interest for the service.  These areas include Eastview Heights, Middle Western Avenue from Spruce Street to Kensington Avenue including all side streets, and the Prospect Street area from Foch Avenue to Willow Brook Lane, also including all side streets.  Residents in these areas will soon be notified by email and postcard of their eligibility.

“It was difficult to decide where to build next given the strong enthusiasm shown throughout many areas of the city. Unfortunately, we can’t build everywhere at once.” Howard said. “Our priority is to bring the service to as many people as possible.  We intend to build in some additional neighborhoods by the end of 2016. Showing interest on whipcityfiber.com will help us decide where to bring Whip City Fiber next.”
