WESTFIELD-Liz Cashman and Jessica Blasko are self-proclaimed “Star Wars nerds” who are plotting an event for all ages on May 4 at the Westfield Athenaeum.
While Cashman oversees the reference department, Blasko spends her days thinking of inventive programs for young people as head of youth services. During a recent brainstorming session that included programs they could do jointly, their enthusiasm for Star Wars struck a chord and immediately ideas starting flying.
“Since May 4 is also known as Star Wars Day: May the 4th Be With You we knew it would be a perfect time for this type of event,” said Blasko.
Over the years, fans worldwide have turned the catch phrase from Star Wars – “May the Force Be With You” – into “May the 4th Be With You” into a rallying cry to express their love of the Star Wars saga. The month of May is particularly important to Star Wars fans since the six live-action movies of the Star Wars saga debuted in May. Across the planet on May 4, thousands of celebrations will take place marking the occasion.
Both Cashman and Blasko were among those attending the recent premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and couldn’t wait to share their love for the latest movie with library patrons.
“The movie is excellent and it is the type of event you can enjoy with your family,” said Cashman. “Come meet other families and enjoy a positive family experience.”
All ages are welcome to attend the screening which starts promptly at 6 p.m. in the Lang Auditorium. All young children must be accompanied by an adult. Due to the length of the movie, there will not be an intermission break. Registration is not required.
From 5:30 to 6, crafts and activities for children will kick off the special event, hosted by Blasko and Cashman.
“The activities and crafts we are planning include a Death Star bean bag toss, a character and creatures photo booth, and creating Yoda from a paper bag and BB-8 from a paper plate,” said Blasko.
Attendees are also encouraged to dress in Star Wars attire.
There is no charge for the evening affair and a wide range of books, movies, video games and soundtracks will be on display that are always available to take out of the library.
Doors will open at 5 p.m. for those who wish to arrive early for seating purposes.
“We will also have small cups of popcorn available for patrons to complete the movie experience,” said Cashman.
In addition to Star Wars Day, the Boys’ & Girls’ Library will be hosting several programs in May including a book group for kids, a book sale May 28, and the screening of The Good Dinosaur on May 7.
