Westfield State student does good deed in time of need

WESTFIELD – A couple weeks ago, a woman needed a desperate helping hand. At the Big Y in Wilbraham, Sue Bartlett was grocery shopping.

As she was looking at recipes on her phone, Bartlett then went to look for ingredients down an aisle and left her phone in her shopping cart.

After going back to her shopping cart and realizing that her IPhone was gone from the cart, Bartlett assumed her phone was stolen during that short amount of time.

Immediately, Bartlett put up a message on her lock screen with her daughter’s phone number on it, just in case there was a slight chance her phone would be found. At the moment, she certainly wasn’t confident that the phone would be returned to her.

“I never expected to get the phone back,” said Bartlett. “I was preparing to cough up $600, $700 for a new one.”

But, the low expectation would quickly take a turn on July 14, just after Bartlett’s phone vanished at the Big Y in Wilbraham.

Bartlett’s daughter received a phone call from a man who said he found Bartlett’s phone. Her daughter informed Sue right away. Using the popular app, Find My iPhone, Bartlett was able to discover her phone was somewhere on Berkshire Ave. in Springfield.

The young man who found the phone, Tyshaun Davis, was in the area of Berkshire Ave. when he saw an IPhone on the ground near a car. It was then when Davis called the number on Bartlett’s lock screen.

Bartlett and Davis then decided to make plans on July 14 to meet so Bartlett could get her IPhone back.

In the late afternoon, after they both finished work, Bartlett and Davis met at Siano’s Italian Restaurant on Boston Rd. in Springfield. Bartlett was certainly happy to get her phone back but more amazed than anything with the simple act of kindness that Davis did.

“This was completely beautiful,” said Bartlett. “It was just someone doing a good deed and deserves to be highlighted.”

Davis reminisced on when he lost his laptop and a complete stranger returned it back to him. It was moments like that one that stuck with Davis.

“If you keep doing good things for people, it will come in return,” said Davis.

Davis, who attends Westfield State University, will be a senior in the fall and lives on campus. A music major who is set on getting his Bachelors of Arts degree, Davis has a passion for playing classical music on his guitar.

Davis can be seen playing at several events on the Westfield State campus as he loves to perform on his guitar and is focusing on becoming a music producer in the near future.

As he continues to focus on his music career, you could say another one of Davis’s passions is bringing joy to others in need.

“Making someone’s day better, it makes me happy,” said Davis.
