WESTFIELD–After reports surfaced in May about an investigation from the Massachusetts Inspector General into South Hadley Electric Light Department (SHELD), multiple municipalities including Westfield Gas and Electric are reportedly under investigation.
The initial report from WWLP about the May investigation related to a nearly $500,000 that was claimed by the then-outgoing manager of SHELD.
“They asked every municipality to do research to see what everyone has available,” Sean Fitzgerald, customer service manager of Westfield Gas and Electric, said.
“We don’t have any concerns from Westfield’s point of view and we are complying with the requests,” Fitzgerald also said. “They have another issue with another municipality.”
When reached for comment, Jack Meyers from the Inspector General’s office said, “our office is required by statute to conduct a lot of this work with confidentiality, so questions about what we’re investigating or whether we’re investigating are something we typically can’t comment on.”
However, an anonymous source told Westfield News “IG made same request to all municipality light plants.”
“The IG is checking to see if there are other municipal light departments with other huge liability problems, accrued leave liability,” the anonymous source said.
