“To be a judge it would be beneficial to have a background in biology, chemistry, computers, environmental science, math, physics, biochemistry, engineering, behavioral science or electronics,” said Donna McKay, chair, Science Department.
All students presently enrolled in a Pre-AP or AP Science course are required to participate in the fair.
“This is our 17th annual science fair,” said McKay, adding she is assisted by teachers Renee Sweeney and Debra Aldrich. “It is one of the largest science fairs in the area.”
McKay explained that the top 12 projects move on to the Region I Fair which is conducted at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. Top projects selected there then move on to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge where they compete for scholarship money.

“In the past several years Westfield High School students have gone so far as the international level of competition,” said McKay. “Art students will also be participating as they share their talents.”
The fair will be open to the public from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 9.
The top three projects at Westfield High School will receive awards – first place is $300; second place, $200, and third place, $100.
“When students advance to the regional fair or state fair, they then compete for scholarship money,” said McKay.
The science fair runs from 8 a.m. (with orientation for the judges) until approximately 1:30.
“There is also a catered lunch provided by our culinary art students,” said McKay.
