SOUTHWICK – A new nutrition based program was launched at Southwick Regional High School just last week. The Second Chance Breakfast is a program that runs from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., between first and second period classes and is offered to grades nine through twelve.
The school district’s Food Service Director, Matt Lillibridge, realized that there is a possibility some students may not be eating much before school due to the fact that school starts at 7:35 a.m.
“We can’t guarantee they’re eating,” said Lillibridge.
The breakfast is a second chance for students to get a quick burst of energy before they head to their next class. According to Lillibridge, healthy smoothies will be offered to the students at the “snack shack” in the cafeteria. Lillibridge also noted that there have been discussions about possibly offering hot food that would be grab-and-go style.
But, for now, the healthy smoothies will be the focus as it will include protein from milk, yogurt, and fruit.
“It’s everything they need on the go,” said Lillibridge.
Lillibridge and the rest of the staff at Southwick Regional High School will focus on how the Second Chance Breakfast progresses.
“We’re hoping it really succeeds,” said Lillibridge.
The Second Chance Breakfast is an initiative that the state of Massachusetts has recommended, as it is also a national movement.
