WESTFIELD—The city’s water commission has voted in favor of a bid for the Joseph Avenue sewer project this week.
The Westfield Board of Water Commissioners accepted a bid of $1.862 million, which was made by Goncalves Construction, according to city engineer Mark Cressotti. The project is expected to begin later this month and is expected to last through the winter months. Funding for the project is coming from a $2.2 million bond that was previously OKed by Westfield City Council. The project could cause frustration on the residents in the area, so Cressotti urges those affected to be patient through the process.
“It’s going to be a difficult project, there’s some pretty deep pipes that need to go in, so residents should be prepared and patient for this,” he said.
Cressotti said the project will be from Joseph Avenue south of Paper Mill Road, also covering portions of Grandview Drive, Rachael Terrance and Christopher Drive, as well as a portion of Paper Mill Road from Mockingbird Lane to Paper Mill School.
According to Cressotti, due to this depth the project’s completion will take longer. This is due to the resettlement and compaction of the earth on and around the pipes afterward, which Cressotti said would occur through the winter months. While that happens, there will be a temporary patch of pavement placed over the construction.
Following the completion of the underground work, there will be an additional project to for permanent paving of the area. This work is not being covered by the $2.2 million bond from Westfield City Council.
