Westfield Man Arrested for Manslaughter in Unattended Overdose Death

SPRINGFIELD – The Office of Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni announced today the arrest of Derek Webb, 32, of Westfield on a charge of manslaughter in connection with the death of Mr. Grady Hughes, 21, of Westfield, Ma.   

On Friday, April 7, 2017, at approximately 2:00 AM, the Westfield Police Department notified the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni’s Office of the unattended death of Mr. Grady Hughes in Westfield. Mr. Hughes appeared to have passed due to an overdose from heroin. 

Derek Webb was identified early on into the investigation as a suspect who may have contributed in the death of Mr. Hughes by providing him illicit narcotics prior to his death. Detectives have been actively seeking Webb’s whereabouts throughout the course of this investigation.   

Detectives from the Massachusetts State Police and Westfield Police Department recently learned of Webb’s whereabouts and with the assistance of the Massachusetts Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section, took him into custody on June 27, 2017.  

Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni stated, “I would like to thank all agencies involved in this investigation and arrest, specifically Trooper Noah Pack, for their professionalism and dedication. This arrest signifies our continued commitment to aggressively enforce the law against those who profit from addiction. As in this case, if there is nexus between a victim’s fatal overdose and a drug dealer, we will investigate and prosecute these cases to the fullest extent of the law, up to and including charges of manslaughter.”  

Derek Webb was has been arrested on charges; Manslaughter, Possession to Distribute a Class A Drug, Distribution of a Class A Drug, Distribution of a Class B Drug, Conspiracy to violate Drug Law.  

Derek Webb is expected to be arraigned in Westfield District Court.
