CHICOPEE – Roberta “Bobbie” Carol (Shumski) Smith, 79, (1938 -2018) of Chicopee, passed away peacefully, January 21, 2018. She was born on November 8, 1938 to Adele and Eugene Shumski. She was a life-long resident of Chicopee. Roberta graduated from Chicopee High in 1956 and from Elms College in 1960 with a degree in Biology, reflecting her love of science. She continued to expand her education throughout her life in such areas as library science and real estate. She worked as a medical technologist, a bookkeeper and was a dedicated homemaker. In 1961, she married Robert Elias Smith (deceased) and they were married for 38 years. A devoted mother, she leaves her sons, Robert Smith of Westfield (wife, Sharon), and Scott Smith of North Grafton (wife, Cheryl), sister, Cynthia Yergeau, granddaughters, Gwen and Nola, and niece Jennifer Yergeau. Bobbie loved to read science fiction, collect teddy bears and snow globes, vacation in Maine and bake. A generous spirit, she enjoyed a vigorous debate. She was well known for the concession stand, she ran for the Centennial Community Theatre, especially her carrot cake and devil dogs and was nominated for a service-industry “Howdy Award.” She volunteered as a cook for many years at the Chicopee Soup Kitchen. She enjoyed throwing parties and creating birthday cakes, but most of all she loved to get in her car and drive; always up for an adventure. She placed others over herself, always and many relatives benefited from her care and friends from her counsel.
