WESTFIELD – A Sackett Street family was surprised about 10:30 Wednesday evening when an unknown man opened their unlocked front door and walked inside.
A resident called police and said that the man appeared to be under the influence of drugs and said that he did not know who or where he was. She said he asked them to call police.
The residents told the man to go back outside and he complied but soon began kicking the door, cracking a glass panel on the door.
When police arrived the man said that he became unconscious after taking two “hits” of marijuana and woke up in a field. He said that he approached the house for help because it was the one with lights in the windows.
The man was transported to Baystate Noble Hospital.
Using a phone number found in the man’s phone, a dispatcher was able to speak with a person who said that he had been at Whitney Field with the suspect for about two hours earlier in the evening.
The witness said he had been at the playground with others when the suspect brought out some marijuana. He said that the suspect offered the weed to the others but nobody accepted it.
After the suspect smoked, the witness said, he began acting oddly and the witness “was no longer comfortable hanging out with him.” The man said he gave the suspect his keys back before he left. The witness asked police to advise the suspect the he did not want to hear from him again.
The suspect said that he did not know where his car was or the person who provided him with the marijuana.
Police found the man’s car parked at Whitney Playground with the windows open. The keys were not found so the car was towed to the police impound yard for safe keeping.
Police filed a criminal complaint against the suspect for breaking and entering with intent to commit a misdemeanor and for trespass.
