‘Little Shop’ promises ‘surprises, scares’

WESTFIELD-Since August, actors from across Western Massachusetts have been rehearsing diligently to bring a beloved musical comedy to the Westfield Theatre Group’s stage this fall.

“The 20 volunteer actors we have from Westfield and across Western Massachusetts give their time and dedication to make these shows possible for our community,” said Little Shop of Horrors artistic director Jay Torres. “They took on the task of learning lines, songs and choreography for three nights a week until showtime.”

Performances at the Westfield Woman’s Club on Court Street are slated Oct. 19, 20, 26 and 27 at 7:30 p.m., as well as a matinee performance on Oct. 27 at 2 p.m. The Westfield Theatre Group is a department of the Westfield Woman’s Club.

Torres is joined on the production team by George Garber, Jr., musical director; producers, Carol Cisek and Meaghan Farrell, and stage manager, Jordan Gawron.

“A production such as this is filled with people who share a love and passion for theatre and storytelling,” said Torres.

Little Shop of Horrors, book and lyrics by Howard Ashman and music by Alan Menken, centers on a strange new breed of plant in a Skid Row florist shop that feeds on human blood and flesh.

“Local audiences can look forward to electric Motown-style, toe-tapping music from an incredible live band, a fun yet zany romantic comedy, and some surprises and scares as well,” said Torres.

Torres added that the show is recommended for audiences ages 13 and older.

Rounding out the cast includes Krystle Bernier, Eric Macksoud, Shealyn Berube, Megan Hoy, Courtney Lyons, Caitlin Odell, Julia Chipkin, Kelly Fellows, Maureen McEvady, Madison Munson, Joanne O’Donoghue, Caroline Pierce, Heath Trudell and Kataira Williams.
